Thank you for your help. It is a conjunction 'that' that is between the distance and a javelin was thrown! (because a javelin was thrown is a complete sentence?)

noun phrase : the distance

For example, using a tape measure to determine the distance that a javelin was thrown yields very similar results regardless of who reads the tape.

"That" is a relative pronoun. The dependent cause is essential (restrictive), so we do not use "which."

AlpheccaStarsA javelin is thrown a certain distance. The winner is whoever throws the javelin the furthest, so the distance must be measured accurately.Using a tape measure to determine that distance yields very similar results regardless of who reads the tape.
I would offer you my belated thanks. Your paraphrasing got me happy.

Anonymousthe distance ^ a javelin was thrown
That's called a "contact relative", by the way. There is no word there, so it's not a pronoun and it's not an adverb.

Thank you for your input on this. Plus, can I enquire of you one question? If it be so, then the following sentence is also a contact relative? ? Use a tape measure to check 'two meters he jumped.'

Anonymousis the following sentence is also a contact relative?
You can't say that the sentence is a contact relative, only that it contains a contact relative.

The phrase is: to check the two meters ^ he jumped

Also,

the newspaper ^ I read yesterday
