Relative clause or new compound sentence

Two bombs exploded in central London yesterday, one of which was planted in the tube system.

Two bombs exploded in central London yesterday, and one of them was planted in the tube system.

Although I believe the first example is technically preferred, especially in formal texts (since the first example shows a dependent relationship), I think the second is more conversational--a style that makes the reader feel he is being spoken to.

Would you agree that the second is better for the reason I have mentioned, except when the text is formal?

Thanks.

Really?

I have to say I very, very rarely would hear the former. Perhaps it depends on the people you are around.
