Relative Clause modifying noun or noun phrase

3 oil tankers, of which there are hundreds, pollute more air than all the cars in the UK.

Can we accept this, or does the relative clause in bold have no choice but to modify 3 oil tankers, not just oil tankers?

3 oil tankers, there are hundreds of which, pollute more air than all the cars in the UK.

And is this acceptable albeit unusual? Why?

Thanks

I can accept that. Easily. On the other hand, 'there are 100s of which' does not work.
