Relative clause

1.The studies indicate the economic contribution of Ethiopia's livestock is 3.5 times higher than current estimates.

2.The studies indicate dolphins to be capable of recognizing themselves in the mirror.

3.The studies indicate that dolphins are capable of recognizing themselves in the mirror.

I am quite confused... When should I use INDICATE followed by that? In first sentence ..though indicate is followed by clause THAT is elided.. whereas in second its not.. Please help me understand..
