Relative

If I see a husband and his wife together having coffee, can I say, “I am seeing that the husband and his relative is having coffee together.”? How close is the word relative when it comes to relationship? Can I say the husband is a relative of the wife? Or “relative” can only be use outside the family? Thanks.

  • It could be his third cousin or his great-grandmother.
  • In fact, it sounds a little like someone who knows very little English has forgotten the word "wife" and substituted "relative" in desperation to complete the sentence.
