Is this expression OK? It sound awkard. Here's the context:
Stated figures are not at all encouraging, and it seems that the relationship toward book/reading is consistent in Croatia – namely, in the 1930's, Antun Barac dealt in a more systematic way with problems of literary communication, and his empirical research on the reception of the literature indicates that the crisis of readership is a permanent condition of Croatian literature.
Can you please give me your suggestions and correct a mistake if you see any? Thank you

Antonia - how about "the attitude toward books/reading" ? " If you say "the reception of the literature," it sounds like you are referring to the published works in a particular scholarly field. Hope this helps.

Antonia - how about "the attitude toward books/reading" ?
In the later part of the sentence (it'a a pretty long sentence - maybe you could break it up at the dash?) where you say his empirical research on the reception of the literature -- if you mean literature in general, omit the "the." If you say "the reception of the literature," it sounds like you are referring to the
