Relationship to, relationship with

I went to a movie yesterday, and I heard the next sentence in the film:

''I didn't know what John's relationship to Booth was.'' ( Booth is a name)

I would say: '' I didn't know what John's relationship with Booth was''

Are both sentences correct? if it isn't, when should I use to and when should I use with

Thanks!
