Hmmm, are you asking the difference between:
being in a relationship,
and
being in an open relationship?

That is, the difference between a regular/normal relationship, and an open relationship?

Yes, of course, I didn't know the difference but I don't have intention to use any of these expressions in a sentence. Why do you recommend to use "in the relationship"?

"Marriage" is a noun, and "relationship" is a noun.

We say, I am married right now. ("Married" is an adjective. We don't have an adjective for "relationship.")
I am in a marriage right now.
I am in a relationship right now.

"John and Mary are in relationship."
Is this OK?
