relationship

Amy: Have you seen John?

Me: John just asked Bob out to a movie, so I think they must be on their way to the theater. Why?

Amy: We were supposed to meet 15 minutes ago. He didn't tell me that he had a date when we scheduled the meeting.

What can you infer from the converstation regarding the relationship between John and Bob?

I'm curious to know whether some of the words used cause an undesired meaning.

Thanks in advance!

I would assume that John and Bob are gay. ask out and date are the words that point to this conclusion. It's hard to know whether the meanings are undesired, since we don't know whether the writer intended to portray John and Bob as gay.

Thank you, Calif. That's what I thought too.

I always have doubt when to use the words 'ask out' and 'date' because it could give my listener the wrong impression. However, I was told that it could be used on guys, at least the word 'date'.

How would you reword the conversation to remove the gay relationship but still retain most of the original words and naturality?

No. Not so.

How would you reword the conversation to remove the gay relationship but still ...
The same as Clive's response.
