Relation vs relationship

What is the difference between "relation" and "relationship"? I think "relationship" is used very often, but it appears to me that it could be replaced by "relation", and I don't see why that isn't done. So why? Thanks.

I think, normally, a "relationship" is between people, and I use "relation" when I talk about other things such as organizations and events. And from what I draw, a relationship is quite closer than a relation... Can anybody confirm my point?
