relate/link

Hello,
Can relate be used in this sentence: "Rock music has always been linked with the drug culture." or in "Police have evidence linking Bates to a drug-importation operation."?

How does "relate" change the meaning of the sentence? I know it is different, but I can't really express it.

Thank you. In this sentence: "There is nothing to connect him with the crime." "relate" cannot be used, can it? It doesn't sound good to me, but I don't know why. What would be the nuance between them? I am trying to figure out the difference.
Thank you again

I think it could (with 'relate to'), but less commonly.

Good luck! I see none.
