Related to past aND PRESENT TENSE

He fought attemps to exploit migrant farm workers

if fought is past tense, why there is attempts, why not ATTEMPT ? what is the structure of the stentence in this case ?

I meant structure of the stentence.

'He fought attempts '

above portion seems ambiguous . I thought it is causitive form. Here, 'attempts' is adjective. Am I right ? I, especially, appreciate the second reply for you mentioned attempts means more than one try.So, he fought attempts means he many times.
