related sentences?

how are sentences related? do you need to be talking about a topic in order for your sentences to relate to each other? what about coherence?is it the same thing?

Top answer

Yes, they need to be talking about the same topic in order to be related, but this has to be considered on an individual basis within the specific text: there is no clear line of relatedness. Coherence as a syntactic term has to do more with particular utterances and conjunctions that connect sentences in a meaningful flow.

so if i say this for example as a sentence to start with

my two favorite sports are basket and baseball.
....in order for the next sentence to relate to the first one it would have to explain why i like basketball and baseball? or can i just write how i run fast up and down the court etc...

It could continue in many ways:

My two favorite sports are basketball and baseball....

...They both require accurate throwing ability
...My sister hates them both, though.
...In basketball, I run a lot.
...My favorite food is sushi and my favorite TV program is 'Friends'.
etc

and you would have to use certain pronouns or synonyms between these sentences in order for them to relate?

No, not at all. The meaning is what counts.
