Hello, In this sentence: "The detectives couldn't find any evidence relating to the robbery.", can we also use "connect" or "link"? They don't sound to me as good. How do you differentiate between relate and connect? I know they are not the same, I would not interchange them, but I can't explain the difference. Any suggestions?

I couldn't edit my post, so I decided to post a new one. If there's something that reminds us of someone/something, can we say: "He relates this painting to his ex-girlfriend."?
What do you think about the other sentence? I am trying to think of a definition, but I can't. How do you think relate is different? In what way? I can't really express it.
