The last consonant is doubled before a suffix if the stress is on the last syllable and the verb ends in a consonant followed by a short vowel sound, which is followed by a consonant: forge tt ing. If the stress is not on the last syllable, you can often choose: kidnapped / kidnaped, focussed / focused. In British English, a final l is doubled even when the stress is on the first syllable: trave ll ing, cance ll ed.
