Regret + verb forms

1a) "He bitterly regretted ever having mentioned it." - He regretted in the past something he had mentioned and shouldn't have done so

1b) "He bitterly regrets ever mentioning it." - He regrets it in the present about having mentioned something in the past

(I am pretty sure about these sentences. Well, let's move on.)
1b) "He bitterly regrets ever mentioning it." He regrets it in the present about having mentioned something in the past

2a) "He bitterly regrets ever having mentioned it." - What is the difference between this sentence and the one above (1b)? Could you please write the same explanation like in the other sentences so that I could comprehend it well?
