Regarding usage of 'to'

Hi all, I have one question regarding 'to', where to use it and were not.

Here is sample one from one book.
" I became a traitor to my country.
The reason : I helped a man escape from a prison of my countrymen."

My doubt is why it should be like below

" The reason : I helped a man to escape from a prison of my countrymen"

Please help my above doubt. I thank you in advance.

Regards,
