Regarding the verb 'to pry'

"Take those pills. I've lived on them for years. They pry open your mind."

Why is the verb 'to open' added in the sentence when the verb, 'to pry' already implies open?

Thank you

The whole phrase is rather odd here, but 'pry' does not mean 'open'; it means (among other things)' to make an effort to open'. They pry open your mind = They pry (until they) open your mind = They attempt to open and succeed in opening your mind.
