Regarding the use of article.

I read an article in NY Times where the author used the article "a" before a plural word. It was like this "..a numbers guy.." Was the author correct in her use? If yes, then why? Why that grammar rule exception.

No. It's a guy. One guy.

But he's a numbers guy. That's an expression that means a guy who works with numbers (mathematics) a lot.
