Regarding the usage of punctuation marks

Is it wrong to leave a space before punctuations marks ( like question mark, colon, semicolon, exclamatory sign, etc. ) ? When we do not leave a space, the punctuation marks are often not noticeable. It looks conjoined. Please answer and advise.
