I am currently majoring in applied linguistics as a graduate student in Taiwan.
The school where I study in offers courses like syntax, pragmatic, discourse analysis, phonology, second langauge acquisition, and there are many overlapping and interconnected terms and concepts in these courses. But somehow it seems that I can not connect these concepts together in these subfields of applied linguistics.
Applied linguistics involving many concepts as well as issues, is a big and difficult subject for me to master though I want to be good at and familiar with the courses I just mentioned. But it's hard for me to achieve this goal. maybe due to the fact that I didnt possess much knowledge of linguistics back in my university.
Is laying a good foundation very important in studying linguistics? Any suggestions for my currently toubled situation?
Thanks a million ^^
