Regarding "Past Perfect"

1) She had told me that she intended to give me no hope.

2) Ever since they were married, she had kept a diary.

My grammar book says the two sentences are grammatical.

But I don't see. I'd say the following seems to be right.

She told me that she had intended to give me no hope.

Ever since they had been married, she kept a diary.
