Grammar

Regarding "Is" or "Are" grammar.

Sentence: There are/is actually not one but two fifth columns in our group!

My question/doubt: What would the right verb in the above sentence, are or is ? Would it be wrong to use "are", if yes then why ?

Are should be used for plurals therefore use are . If you were discussing the group as an unit then you woulod use the single form is. My group is going......

  • Are should be used for plurals therefore use are .

  • My group is going......
  • (everyone is going as a group).
  • You have a split in the group so therefore its members are refered to in a plural form.
