Regarding a use of preposition.

Sentence: "Anti-incumbency is building up against/on XYZ party"

My question: What preposition ould be correct to use in the sentence? I've seen both prepositions being used in the past, therefore, I'm asking. XYZ could by any political party.

Thanks and regards

  • I don't like 'against', because 'anti-' also embodies the idea of 'against'.
  • It takes too long to figure out the meaning, kind of lke a double negative.

Hi,

That's because to me the sentence is not a good one, regardless of which preposition you use.

That's why I suggested a different way of saying it.

Hi,

My answer to your question is-

Sentence:"Anti-incumbency is building up against/on XYZ party"

The word 'anti' though it denotes something against or a kind of opposition, you can't use the preposition 'on ' with it as 'on' denotes something favourable. Therefore the sentence "Anti-incumbancy is building up against XYZ Party'. is more appropriate.
