Could you please anyone explain this pattern? I know the meaning but I don't know the differences with similar expressions.

Paul regards sex as sinful and immoral.
Paul thinks about sex as sinful and immoral.

I wondered if I could learn that pattern better, and learn when and where should I use that pattern through your perfect explanation. I tried to say same thing through two other verbs, so it helps to who give me the favor of answering to understand what I am asking.
