regard and respect

Hi folks,

I haven't been able to sus this one out anywhere:

A lot of writing I see lately have the phrases "in regards to...", or in some cases "in respect to..."

Surely it should be "with regard to..." and "with respect to..."??

Am I right or is it legit to say/write either?

My dictionary says that "in regard to", "with regard to", "regarding" and "respecting", and " as regards" (no "to") are all acceptable, though the last of these is disparaged by some stylists. "in some respects" is thought to be much better than "in some regards", the latter being rejected by most of the usage panel. No notes were provided for "in respect to" or "with respect to".

My guts turns every time I see 'in regard to...' I have a sentence in front of me at the moment that says "...significant to my understanding in re=gards to its context..."

I'll just have to live with it... : )
