Regain the suppressed rights

While reading a book, I found the following sentence.

"people who had been treated unfairly in American society began to organize collective movements to regain their suppressed rights."

Is it possible to regain 'suppressed' rights?

It is possible to regain 'lost' rights, but the expression of regaining oppressed rights seems logically strange.

How about changing it into 'restore' their suppressed rights?
