regain route deviate from route

English teacher,
Am I using the right words? Is there a wording, term, verb or grammar problem?

Are these natural? If not how to make them natural?
We missed our freeway exit so had to make a detour to regain our route.
He deviated from the path route we asked him to take.

Many thanks
