I applied for the US visa and when I went to retrieve the passport they told me your visa application is rejected.

What is the difference between :
Your visa has been refused and your visa has been rejected.?

They obviously both indicate an unsuccessful application. However, "rejected" may indicate that the application was not even considered for some reason, e.g. non-fulfillment of prerequisites.

Why don't you contact them and enquire as to why they rejected your application?

Thank you for your reply. I didn't apply yet but I want to know what is the difference between "reject & refuse" and how to use them correctly. Which one do you prefer to use in the business letter?
I usually get this message from my bank "The transaction number xxxxxxx was rejected due to ......." why they used rejected instead of refused?

In a banking context you might also encounter "has been declined."
