Refuse + a pronoun

Hi.

We made her an excellent offer but she ____________ it.

a) refused b) rejected c) denied d) accepted

"b" is correct. Any reason why "a" cannot be used? Or is it incorrect to use a pronoun after "refuse"?

Thank you.

radovan Or is it incorrect to use a pronoun after "refuse"? No. It is a rather poor question in my opinion.

  • The setter presumably thinks that "reject" collocates with "offer" better than "refuse" does (that is the only reason to choose one over the other).

No.

It is a rather poor question in my opinion. The setter presumably thinks that "reject" collocates with "offer" better than "refuse" does (that is the only reason to choose one over the other). This may be true in some people's perception (in fact I would marginally choose "rejected" myself
