Refreshment?

Hello all,
I'm new to this forum, so hi Emotion: smile
My question is: Can a cold shower or a swim be a refreshment? Or is a refreshment always a drink?
Thank you!

Hi and welcome to the forums! They can be refreshing , but not a refreshment. EDIT: I just saw V's post, and sometimes you'll see words in dictionaries that are simply not used.

  • This would not be used to mean "something that was refreshing" in the US.

MW says that it can be used both ways:

It's not often used in the former way, however. I would say that a swim is refreshing.

Thank you both! I was going to say "You have to take your refreshments where you can get them", referring to a swim - I take it this would be incorrect, then? What noun would you use instead?

It is a challenge!

Take the chance get refreshed?
Grab opportunities to feel refreshed when you can?

Usually "refreshments" (in the plural) refers to beverages and snacks.
