Reflexive Pronouns

John Adams was convinced that English would spread itself to other parts of the world.

There is something going on in the sentence above with the reflexive pronoun, itself.

However, I just can't find a relevant grammatical rule which explain the issue.

Help is appreciated!

I don't find any problem with the reflexive pronoun or the sentence in general.

Lukeboythe reflexive pronoun, itself.
It's unnecessary, but it's OK.
