Referring to a coma in the past tense

I'm reading a book where the main character has woken from a coma. Some time has passed and they are talking about the coma she had been in. Is it correct to say "what did you do when I was in the coma" or does it have to be "what did you do when I was in a coma?" Any help would be great. Thanks

Anonymous Is it correct to say "what did you do when I was in the coma" It's correct grammatically, but it sounds wrong; it's not idiomatic. Use "a coma". CJ
