Referring a Company with They

Hello,

I work for a financial institution and most of our customers are companies. I have seen many people referring to a company as "they" in business communication.

Is this correct? May be this example would further clarify my point.

"Star enterprise has various sister concerns functioning around the world. Besides mobile manufacturing, they are also into web designing and other internet based services.”

If "they" is not appropriate then what should be used instead of they in the above mentioned sentence, "It"?

Regards,

Saulat.
