Referral or recommendation

Hi,

“I got a referral/recommendation from my doctor for five physiotherapy sessions (my health insurance will cover it).”

Which one is more appropriate and what is the difference?

I feel like the definitions of these two words overlap, so I think that ‘referral’ is essentially a type of recommendation.

Thank you.
