‘References’ or ‘reference’?

Is it really necessary to add -s in ‘reference’ in my sentence below? In my opinion, it is NOT. Please help me if my opinion is correct.

His essay on failed relationships was featured in a book by Dr. Loggins, with metaphorical (references, reference) to “heartaches” as “long-term diseases” and “newfound love” as “a spring of joy.”
