Any difference between a 'reference' and a 'recommendation' in the context of employment?

Note: I am assuming you're talking about applying for a job or writing a resume. "Reference" implies basic factual information (e.g. who was your supervisor for your previous position?), while "recommendation" implies a more personal information (e.g. your previous supervisor gives information about your personality and work ethic).
