Reference to the context

Hi

In India and Pakistan, the phrase "reference to (the) context" is very common.

When the students of English literature are taught a poem, they are expected to write reference to the context of a stanza before giving its explanation in their own words.

I want to know if the phrase "reference to the context" is common among native speakers.

Thanks,

Tom

I vaguely remember this 'RTC' from my schooldays many years ago, my children haven't heard of it so I don't think it's used in the UK any more.
