"reference point" but relating to a person?

Hello helpers,

I'm at a loss for a word. How can you describe a person who acts as a reference point to other people?

I can only come up with something that sounds "heavy":

"These stars, whose origins were in the countryside, offered a reference of identification for ordinary people."

Your help is greatly appreciated!

Sometimes "touchstone" is used in connection with people. "Criterion" is probably also too heavy, and doesn't quite fit your sentence.
