reference letter

I have been asked to act as reference for a job application in the UK. I know the UK has an entirely different type and style of reference system than we do in Germany. However, I do not know enough details as to be sure that I won't cause more harm than good...

Do you know any good wbsites with examples, style recommendations or explanations. Do the UK people use a kind of "code system" of positive phrases meaning horrible things as we do in Germany?

(Circumstances: The applicant is technician and wants to work in the UK industry for some time. I am chemist and his former division/group leader.)

there isn't a code for these things no, not really. although it's easy to read between the lines sometimes. Actually, reference letters these days in the UK rarely do more than confirm that someone was employed as 'job title' and the dates of employment.

  • This is due to employers being at risk of being sued if anything in the reference is inacurrate or derogative - so reference letters nowadays stick to facts and figures only and do not have any opinions in them.

Thanks for the swift reply. I wonder what sense reference letters make under these circumstances, but it appears that I will be able to provide a letter without too much trouble.
