What is the difference between referees and references when it comes to job applications? Should you give the recruiter your references or your referees?

In the UK, referees are the people who write references.

I'm glad you wrote that, Rover. I know the term only as people who enforce the rules in sports. I would have "corrected" that one before today. So if you're job hunting here (in the US), you might ask someone if they would be one of your reference. They don't write a letter (usually) but the potential employer might call them to get an outsider's opinion. Would you say "Would you be one of my refe
