Referee in BrE and AmE

Dear Users,

According to one of my dictionaries, one of the meanings of the the word referee in BrE is: a person willing to testify in writing about the character or ability of someone, especially an applicant for a job.

Is there a different word that Americans use? Can I safely use referee both in AmE and BrE? For instance, can I say:

May I add you to my list of referees?

Thank you
