referee and umpire

What's the difference between referee and umpire?

Aren't they both judges? Can we make it less comlpicated by calling them judges instead of referees or umpires?

As far as I'm concerned "umpire" is used instead of a "tennis referee".But I'm not sure.

In tennis:

- there is a chair umpire, the guy giving the score, taking decisions, etc, from the seat

- there is also, in better tournaments, a tournament referee, who judges conflicts over all the courts of a tournament

Umpire is also used in baseball - he's the guy who says whether the pitch was a ball or a strike, among other things.

A referee has the authority to make decisions as he/she see's fit during the match. Eg, the referee calls a foul if they believe they have seen one.

An umpire acts as a decision-maker IF the game is contested one way or another by either player (s). Eg, for an out call in tennis, the umpire makes the decision.

That is the fundamental difference.
