Refer to, mean, or something else

Hi,

Can I use refer to or mean in the following conversations? If not, what word should I use?

A: Can you buy me a balloon?
(There are many balloons of different colors)
B: Do you mean / refer to this one?
A: No. That one, the purple.

Thanks

A: Can you buy me a balloon? B: Do you mean this one? A: No.

  • A: Can you buy me a balloon?
  • B: Do you mean this one?
  • A: No.
  • That one, the purple one.
  • 'Refer to' (or correctly, 'are you referring to') is much too formal for this situation.
