Refer to future from past point of time .

this sentence confuses me .

"he was to find out years later that the care he has bought was stolen."

from the word , i have two guest,
1 , he have had a car for years, and he found out that he bought a stolen car.
2 , he just found out that his car has been stolen for many years.

It seems to me that it should be "had bought".
