Reel In

http://voices.yahoo.com/tips-fishing-319403.html

"I waited for a bite, as I fished my youngest son out of the stream as he'd found his way trying to find a snake. I luckily didn't see the snake! I had attached what my brother in law deems the city slicker way to fish, a bell, and it jingled now. This means I had a bite. So I reeled in my pole to find my bait gone. Darn, I had to go through that whole procedure all over again. "

How does one "reel in" a fishing pole, since it is of fixed length?
