Redundant or...?

Hi, In most of the essays my students write,they use'In my opinion, I think... .' Is it OK to use the opinon expressions together they way I demonstrated or is poor style?

I would teach students to avoid using: "In my opinion, I think that the..."

It is redundant - but also a common mistake.

Try teaching "I believe that the ......."

Actually, as they develop in ability, learners should be encouraged to avoid all such phrases (I think, I believe, In my opinion, etc). It is better writing style to make any succeeding statement in the knowledge that the essay itself is the writer's opinion, so that 'I think that men should respect each other more because...' becomes simply 'Men should respect each other more, because.

Hi,

Further to MrM's excellent comment, let me add this. I expressly encourage students who are in or close to post-secondary education to avoid the first person completely in essays ( unless the topic they are given very clearly asks them to use first-person, eg Write about what you did last summer' ).
