redundant??

hey - having issues with redundancy here....

"The PIC18F2331 microprocessor supplied by Microchip was used to perform all the necessary instructions and calculations required by the hovercraft"

..in this sentence i have included the words <necessary> and <required> ...is this not redundant...think about it...if it's necessay - then obviously it's required??
but to be honest it does sound fine to me...
thanks

I don't see the need for 'necessary'. All the instructions and calculations are surely necessary.

  • necessary instructions says that the instructions are necessary
  • required says asked, requested by what or by whom.

It doesn't sound so bad, but it has a superfluous, unneeded, and unnecessary necessary that is neither required nor obligatory. Actually, I found it somewhat redundant as well.

I'd agree with Aperistic.

  • 'Necessary' doesn't mean all instructions, but those, which are generally considered as an agreed upon minimal set.
  • 'Required', because these instructions provide optimal operation of Hovercraft, and are important for its particular needs.

Schetin 'Necessary' doesn't mean all instructions, but those, which are generally considered as an important set.
This is a bad definition, IMO. It's all the instructions which are needed.

And if there are instructions which are required for the operation of the Hovercraft, they are of course

Maybe I was not clear

Here how I see this

The PIC18F2331 microprocessor supplied by Microchip was used to perform all the necessary instructions and calculations required by the hovercraft

=>

The PIC18F2331 microprocessor supplied by Microchip was used to perform all the essential instructions and calculations required by the hovercraft (to operate)

necessary isn't a full synonym of essential

I can accept essential here, but not necessary.
To me, it's quite a jump.
