Hi, I'm wondering how a professional English teacher would explain why "the work (being) completed," is correct as well as "the work having been completed." As "we went home" took place a while after the work was completed, I thought there must be a word explicitly telling us about the time lapse.

No. There doesn't have to be such a word.

The work ( [being / having been] ) completed, we went home

shows a less explicit relationship than the following, but can be roughly paraphrased by any of them.

Once the work was completed, we went home.
