Reduce by one

Hi,

The following sentence is taken from a card game Magic: the Gathering:

whenever a source deals damage to you, that damage is reduced by 1

Does "damage is reduced by 1" mean that instead of having 5 damage points I obtain only one or instead of acquiring 5 points I would get 4 points - one less?

'reduced by 1' = one point down. So, yes, it seems that you would luck out and get only 4 damage points instead of 5.
